Civilization vs. Savagery

On an island where young boys are left alone with NO adults, the boys will do whatever it takes to survive. Things started off civilized and organized, but they ended quite differently.

Throughtout the story, Jack and Ralph were directly demonstrating civilization vs. savagery. Ralph was constantly trying to keep everyone organized and peaceful, while Jack was doing whatever it takes to become powerful. Ralph would rather have everyone work together, but Jack liked ultimate power. These boys were polar opposites, and this was one of the main sources of conflict in the story.

"Ralph and Jack looked at each other while society paused about them. The shameful knowledge grew in them and they did not know how to begin confession... Will you start the fire"

During this scene at the beginning of the story, both of these boys were very innocent, so much that they did not even know how to start a fire. By mid-story, Jack was showing such savagery that he offered to kill a young child to trick a pig.
